A new course to close out 2018!

We constantly strive to keep our course offerings up to date and relevant to the industry, so we aim to add new courses to our calendar several times a year! Our latest new workshop is Lean for Construction – A Practical Approach. We want to help you reduce costs, improve lead times, and foster collaboration by introducing key Lean concepts and how they can applied on a daily basis. Not sure what Lean for Construction is? Here’s a good overview.

Here’s what you’ll learn in our workshop:

A practical, jargon-free approach to Lean
Implement a culture of problem solving in 4 simple steps:

  • Define value from your customer’s perspective
  • Capture the current state: visually capture all activities required to bring the project from initiation to completion
    • The importance of value-adding work
    • How to capture the 8 types of waste
  • Develop the plan: prioritize wastes for elimination
  • Improve using Plan, Do, Check, Act: design and implement effective solutions

The resulting impact on costs, lead-time, quality, and culture

Getting ready to take your Carpentry Red Seal Exam? We have the course for you!

Getting ready to take your Red Seal Exam in Carpentry and want to refresh your knowledge? We can help!

On November 23 to 25, we are offering an exam preparation course in Victoria aimed at helping you brush up on the theory that you’ll need when you write your exam to become a Red Seal-designated Carpenter. This intensive three-day session is perfect for people who have met the Industry Training Authority (ITA) challenge requirements or who have failed the exam on their previous attempts.

In order to write the exam, you will need to have a minimum of 9,720 hours of workplace experience in the trade, or have completed all four years of technical training plus 6,480 hours of workplace training. You also must have an exam challenge application approved by the ITA. For more information and to register, click here.

Spotlight on: Cannabis in the Workplace breakfast session

There are new and significant changes coming regarding the legal status of cannabis, and we want to make sure you know how to handle them! We are pleased to bring a new breakfast session, Cannabis in the Workplace, to Burnaby on September 25.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this informative two-hour session:

  • Learn more about the federal “Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations”.
  • Understand that a “prescription” for cannabis does not give an employee the absolute right to use it in the workplace.
  • Understand your rights when it comes to those in Safety-Sensitive positions.
  • Discuss employee and employer obligations with regard to the use of cannabis.
  • Recognize the rights, responsibilities and risks for both employers and employees to avoid unnecessary litigation.
  • Identify the various ways the use of cannabis impacts the employer-employee relationship, and what you can do about it.
  • Identify what employers should be doing now to prepare for the pending legalization by reviewing their workplace drug and alcohol policies.

Managing Stress and Understanding Anger – coming to a city near you!

Everyone deals with stress, and sometimes that stress leads to anger. But you’re in luck! We have two of our popular courses coming up this fall that deal with both issues: Managing Stress in the Workplace, and Understanding Anger and Healthy Responses!

In our Managing Stress workshop, you’ll learn how to recognize stress, how it effects your work and personal life, and some effectives strategies for handling stress in the workplace. You’ll also learn how to reduce your stress and set goals for effectively managing both internal and external stressors. Plus, you’ll earn 7 Group A CPD Points from BC Housing! Interested? Our first session takes place on September 10 in Prince George, followed by September 17 in Fort St John, October 1 in Victoria, October 22 in Burnaby, and October 25 in Kelowna!

In our Understanding Anger and Healthy Responses workshop, you’ll learn how to understand and manage anger constructively, both your own and that of others. You’ll also learn conflict de-escalation techniques and how to build resilience. We have sessions of this course scheduled in Prince George on September 11, in Fort St John on September 18, in Victoria on October 2, in Kelowna on October 26, and in Burnaby on November 16.
