Grants and Programs

Accessing government programs and grants is one of the challenges the CITN can assist you with. Whether you’re a student, apprentice, business owner or tradesperson, there are grants and programs available to help you.

Employers Apprentices/Students Employment Resources
B.C. Government Training Tax Credit

The training tax credit provides refundable income tax credits for employers who employ apprentices enrolled in apprenticeship programs administered through the Industry Training Authority (ITA).

The training tax credit provides refundable income tax credits for apprentices enrolled in programs administered through the Industry Training Authority (ITA).

WorkBC Employment Services Centres

The WorkBC Employment Services Centres (ESCs) offer a full range of free job search and career planning programs and resources for unemployed or underemployed British Columbians.

 Federal Government Apprentice Job Creation Tax Credit

The AJCTC is a non-refundable tax credit equal to 10% of the eligible salaries and wages payable to eligible apprentices in respect of employment after May 1, 2006. The maximum credit an employer can claim is $2,000 per year for each eligible apprentice. If your business hires an “eligible apprentice,” you qualify to claim the credit.

 B.C. Access Grant for Labour Market Priorities

This program provides grant funding to encourage eligible students to attend targeted high priority programs at eligible B.C. public post-secondary institutions.

Job Options BC Employment Program

Job Options BC is an employment and skills training program that can help unemployed British Columbians, who are not EI eligible, gain the skills, confidence and experience they need to find employment, or move on to further training

 Hiring through the Express Entry Program

If you are a Canadian employer, you can hire Express Entry candidates to meet your labour needs when you are not able to find Canadians or permanent residents to fill job vacancies. You can use the same recruiting and hiring practices you use now.

 Federal Government Apprenticeship Completion Grant

The Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) is a one-time taxable cash grant of $2,000 maximum available to registered apprentices who have successfully completed their apprenticeship training and obtained their journeyperson certification in a designated Red Seal trade on or after January 1, 2009.

Aboriginal Training for Employment Program

The Aboriginal Training for Employment Program assists in the transition of Aboriginal people into sustainable employment.

 Temporary Foreign Workers Program

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) assists employers in filling their genuine skill and labour requirements, on a temporary basis, when qualified Canadians and permanent residents are not available.

 Federal Government Apprenticeship Incentive Grant

The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) is a taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year, up to a maximum of $2,000 per person, available to registered apprentices once they have successfully finished their first or second year/level (or equivalent) of an apprenticeship program in one of the Red Seal trades.

 Aboriginal Business and Entrepreneurship Skills Training

Aboriginal BEST is a free training series that helps to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit of people, communities, and organizations. Aboriginal BEST is for Aboriginal, Métis, and Inuit, status or not, who are interested in becoming self-employed or starting their own business.

 Canada-BC Job Grant

The Canada-B.C. Job Grant (CJG) will provide up to $500,000 to employers in the Construction sector to train current or future employees in the sector.

Canada Apprentice Loan

The Canada Apprentice Loan is an initiative of the Government of Canada to help you complete your apprenticeship in a designated Red Seal trade.

 ACCESS Employment Assistance Service

ACCESS has four Employment Assistance Service offices located across Metro Vancouver, each strategically located to ensure accessibility for our urban Aboriginal clients.

 

Information for employers from the Industry Training Authority

When you hire on an apprentice you are committing to train and develop them into a Tradesperson. In return, the apprentice will be completing projects, tasks and jobs that are critical to the success of your business.

 Tradesperson’s Tools Deduction

If you have purchased eligible tools to earn employment income as a tradesperson or apprentice, you may be able to deduct their cost, including any goods and services tax (GST), provincial sales tax (PST) or harmonized sales tax (HST) you paid.

 Skills Connect for Immigrants Program

The Skills Connect for Immigrants program (Skills Connect) is an individualized employment bridging program that helps skilled immigrants connect to jobs in B.C. that build on their pre-arrival skills, training, knowledge, and experience.

ITA ACE IT Program

Save time and money by getting a head start on the technical training for an apprenticeship program while you’re still in high school. As an ACE IT student, you’ll attend a trades training class at a local high school, a partner post-secondary institution or an ITA-certified training facility and receive credits that count towards your high-school diploma and at least one level of technical training for your industry training program.
