Spotlight on: Cannabis in the Workplace breakfast session

September 19, 2018 By Kerry Vital

There are new and significant changes coming regarding the legal status of cannabis, and we want to make sure you know how to handle them! We are pleased to bring a new breakfast session, Cannabis in the Workplace, to Burnaby on September 25.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this informative two-hour session:

  • Learn more about the federal “Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations”.
  • Understand that a “prescription” for cannabis does not give an employee the absolute right to use it in the workplace.
  • Understand your rights when it comes to those in Safety-Sensitive positions.
  • Discuss employee and employer obligations with regard to the use of cannabis.
  • Recognize the rights, responsibilities and risks for both employers and employees to avoid unnecessary litigation.
  • Identify the various ways the use of cannabis impacts the employer-employee relationship, and what you can do about it.
  • Identify what employers should be doing now to prepare for the pending legalization by reviewing their workplace drug and alcohol policies.

We want to help you meet some of the challenges that you’ll face in the coming months, and answer your questions around the use of cannabis in the workplace. Check out our full course calendar here.

One of our popular courses is back for 2018! Our Supervisors Bootcamp is returning to Victoria on April 27, Prince George on May 29, Fort St John on June 21, Burnaby on July 11, and Whitehorse on May 15.

The Supervisors Bootcamp is designed specifically for front-line supervisors and managers in all industries. It is open to individuals with all levels of experience, but is most effective for those working for companies with an already established safety management system. Participants will be given a leadership ‘tool kit’ comprised of the simplest but most effective leadership concepts, from which they can effectively build and develop their own leadership style. They will also take self-assessment questionnaires and participate in exercises based on the actual work they do and the crews they lead.

Safety First!

February 6, 2018 By Kerry Vital

And by safety, obviously we mean safety courses!

Accidents happen, and that’s especially true in construction. According to WorkSafeBC, accidents at work are responsible for millions of dollars in claims every year. Our safety training courses are here for you, before any accidents happen. We offer Fall Protection, Occupational First Aid Level 1, Responsibilities of Joint Health and Safety Committees, Trenching & Excavation Safety… The list is seemingly endless!

Our public course calendar can be found here, but if you want to bring one of these or any other safety course to your job site, we can do that too! Send us an email to info@trainingnetwork.ca with your location, the number of people you want to train, and the course you need, and we’ll handle it from there. We can even book a venue and catering for you, if you are not able to hold it on your job site.

We want you to be safe at work, and being properly trained goes a long way toward that goal!

Spotlight on: Responsibilities of Joint Health and Safety Committees

August 22, 2017 By Kerry Vital

Change is afoot, and our training department is responding to it!

As of April 2017, WorkSafeBC’s changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations around Joint Health and Safety committees and Worker Health and Safety Representatives makes training mandatory. Anyone joining a Joint Health and Safety Committee is required to take at least eight hours of training. ICBA is pleased to be able to offer this training as part of our continued commitment to exceptional customer service for our members and the construction industry as a whole (remember, you don’t have to be a member of ICBA to take our courses!).

Participants will learn:

  • How to use the OHS Regulation and WC Act to access health & safety requirements;
  • How to explain the roles and functions of the Joint Committee and the Worker Representatives;
  • How to perform an incident investigation;
  • How to perform a formal site inspection; and
  • How to:
    • Promote workplace health and safety
    • Assist in ensuring the health and safety program elements are implemented;
    • Conduct and participate in Joint Committee Meetings; and
    • Work cooperatively to address workers’ health and safety concerns.

Our first session is September 7 in Burnaby! We’re also offering it on October 12 and again on November 16.  Interested in taking this course or any of our other upcoming workshops? Check out the full list here.
