How can we change the conversation about careers in construction?

April 12, 2016 By Kerry Vital

Careers in the trades are a dead end. The trades are dirty and unsafe. People go into the trades when they aren’t smart enough to get a “real job.”

All of these are things we’ve heard when we ask why people don’t consider a career in trades. That conversation needs to change. Over the next decade, about 40 percent of the construction workforce is expected to retire, and it’s important that new entrants to the field are able to replace them. But there are so many misconceptions out there, and it’s time that we debunked them.

Much has been made recently in the news about how workers in other provinces aren’t able to find jobs. That’s not true in B.C., where our economy is booming due to major projects being built. We will continue to see job growth in the construction sector, and young people going into the trades can be comfortable in the knowledge that they are on the path to a life-long career if they so choose.

Apprenticeships are on the rise in British Columbia

February 6, 2016 By Kerry Vital

Last year, almost 10,000 employers sponsored apprentices. This is up from about 9,500 in 2014. However, there are many misconceptions about hiring an apprentice; among them is that training someone will slow you down or cost you too much time and money. This can cause problems down the road as people retire. “Skilled tradespeople only come from three sources: you either grown your own through apprentices, or you poach them from others, or you import them,” says Industry Training Authority CEO Gary Herman.

According to the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, for every dollar invested in an apprentice employers get a return of $1.47, which doesn’t count annual tax credits or grants for the employer and apprentice.

What does the construction industry need to do better in 2016?

December 31, 2015 By Kerry Vital

The Journal of Commerce asked members of its Editorial Advisory Board how they thought the industry could improve in 2016. Jack Davidson, president of the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association and one of our founding members, had this to say:

“The construction industry needs to do a better job of finding, recruiting and training our next generation of skilled workers. The industry needs to: promote careers not just jobs; ensure training standards meet industry needs; help workers and employers make connections; help find the appropriate training that a worker requires to advance, track and update their credentials; and do a better job of advising government and other stakeholders on key workforce and labour issues.”

The CITN does all of these things, and we appreciate the support that Jack and our association partners have given us.

Apprenticeship is at the core of BC trades

November 1, 2015 By Kerry Vital

This week is Apprenticeship Recognition Week in B.C., where we recognize the contribution of the trades to our province. The trades touch everyone every day, whether you’re driving on roads built by tradespeople or going to work in a concrete skyscraper.20130319-BASF_launches_new_brand_for_construction_industry-hi-res

“The importance of the skilled trades to society cannot be understated,” says Gary Herman, CEO of the Industry Training Authority. “Developing a skilled workforce is not just for today, but also for ensuring that B.C.’s economy and workforce will be protected through the next 80 years and beyond. Through growing and supporting apprenticeship, we can continue to build a skilled workforce to help ensure that British Columbians have the skills they need to be first in line for the many opportunities coming our way across the province.”
